The Black Knight

Description

I finally got around to finishing this guy. This is in no way based on the Black Knight character from The White Knight Chronicles, or from the Monty Python lampoon; this guy is my original creation, simply put.
I've been going through an emotional rollercoaster for these past 10 months, and imagery of a being in black armor sometimes came to mind. In fact, I would romanticize my cold exterior to most women by referring to it on a metaphorical basis as my Black Armor; I even made a poem about My Armor.
Some of the referrences I used to make the Black Knight were very easy to find. First off, the Create-A-Soul feature from Soul Calibur III helped a lot. Then I used Nightmare's helm (minus the horn) and extended the visor vertically. Then I added the fins from Nightmare's first helmet and stretched them out (to make them look more like wings). I then used the motif for Darth Vader's cape and undercoat, and tattered the ends. Finally, Oda Nobunaga's chestpiece to complete the process (minus the flame accents). As I have romanticized about the Black Armor, it was designed to hide away all traces of the wretch's humanity within the cold armor. Yes, this guy serves as my manifestation of my broken heart.
Then came the part where I have to create a backstory for him. What is his name? Where did he come from? And what compelled this guy to sell his soul and become the Black Knight.
Some of the basic backstory didn't come to me until watching the special edition of Sleeping Beauty, where the cerebral clockwork started up. I am imagining that the Sleeping Beauty tale was not as simple and linear as it seems. What if Aurora was actually involved in a love triangle? What if there was another guy who knew Aurora before Philip? I am imagining that there was another guy who met Aurora as a child, himself a child. Aurora at first was frightened of this newcomer because of his foreign appearance, though she eventually came to see him as a friend. She never had any interest in the boy because of his darker complection, but fell head over heels for Philip when she came of age. The other guy, on the other hand, longed for Aurora for many years, and became jealous when this 'newcomer' Philip just waltzed in and swept her away. Despair took him, and he ran into the woods, hoping that he meets his fate with the local wolves.
Instead, the sorceress who desired the end for the princess meets the wretched youth, and offers him an end to his suffering. The terms were that she take away the very thing that causes his heartache, in exchange for near-limitless, transfinite power. The young man jumped at the offer without considering the cost. The sorceress has in fact taken away something from him: the ability to feel happiness, but left behind his broken heart. The young man, now covered in the cold black steel, was as equally cold inside, with the ability to feel no other emotion other than despair, grief, and pain. This was how the Black Knight became Maleficent's apprentice.
Instead of a spindle, Maleficent sends the Black Knight to abduct the princess. In Maleficent's dungeon, the Black Knight watches over Aurora, struggling against the metal bonds. As she pleads with the Knight for freedom, the armored being instead gives subtle hints of who he is. Recognizing the voice, she finally calls to him by his name: Alejandro. The Black Knight was quick to refute that name, claiming that "the boy you knew...Alejandro, is long dead and gone. Now all that remains is the wretch." The Black Knight revealed his life-long admiration for the princess, and she in turn tries to talk some sense into him. When the sentries alert him that Philip is approaching the stronghold, the Black Knight walks out to meet him, conflicted over her words.
The Prince and the Black Knight cross swords at the gate. The Prince has been granted armor to rival the Black Knight's powers, and the battle nearly tears apart Maleficent's stronghold. The Black Knight intentionally directed both of their attacks to destroy the dungeon gates, hoping to provide the princess a means of escape. The Black Knight is apparently dispatched by the Prince. Maleficent appears, enraged by her apprentice's failure and the destruction of her castle; transforms into the dragon. In her rage, Maleficent injures the prince, and sets her eyes on Aurora. Before she can make her move, the castle behind her explodes; the foundations falling down a chasm. The Black Knight flies forth from the crumbling stronghold, landing hard between the dragon and the royal couple. Removing the damaged helm, he finally reveals his face to Aurora, his yellow eyes betraying the corruption of his soul. He pleads for the royal couple to run away as he prepares for his final attack. The prince does not double-guess his decision and takes the princess by the hand and pulls her out. The Black Knight summons his powers to let loose a storm of lightning bolts, pushing the dragon back into the chasm. The dragon defies by breathing fire at the Knight. Apparently overwhelmed by her flame attack, the Black Knight responds by driving the sword into the ground, surging the same powers down into the ground. The ground splits, collapsing under Maleficent's weight, and the dragon falls. The impact proved too great as the ground splits underneath the Black Knight's feet. Before falling, the Black Knight looks at Aurora one last time, "...în obscuritate voi rămâne."
At the wedding, the princess is given one final wish. Her wish is for her old childhood friend Alejandro to be given a second chance to find his happiness. At the base of the cliff, the rocks give way as an armored being stands again.
Another influence for creating the Black Knight was listening to Nightwish - Ghost Love Score. Hearing that melody over and over again: "My fall will be for you, my love will be in you, you were the one to cut me, so I will bleed forever," it made me think as to how will such a song tie in with the visual I had in mind? Somehow, it seems to work.
